Salman Khan, Khan Academy Ethosolution, Yes we Khan“I see a world where literally anyone with access to a computer and the internet will be able to go to the Khan academy and get a world class education; it’ll be the world free virtual school.”

Salman Khan, Founder of the Khan Academy

Here’s a 3-minute intro to Salman Khan and a sample of his free school online courses:

The History of Salman Khan and His Free

Online Training Courses

Salman Khan’s mother is Indian (from Kolkata) and his father is Bangladeshi. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, and earned his first three degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (a BS in mathematics, a BS in electrical engineering and computer science, and an MS in electrical engineering and computer science) before going on to complete his MBA at Harvard. The first videos that became the beginnings of the Khan Academy were made in late 2004 as Khan began tutoring his cousin Nadia in mathematics using Yahoo!’s Doodle Notepad. When other relatives and friends showed interest in similar help, Salman decided it would be most practical to record the tutorials and share them through YouTube. By 2009 Khan’s free online education courses had become so astoundingly popular that he quite his hedge fund analyst job to focus full-time on producing and posting even more free courses online.

“I’d say we’ve moved about 160 IQ points from the hedge fund category to the teaching-many-people-in-a-leveraged-way category. It was a good day his wife let [Salman] quit his job.”

Bill Gates

The Khan Academy became a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, received backing from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and then in 2010, Google announced it would give the Khan Academy $2 million for creating more courses and for translating the core library into the world’s most widely spoken languages as part of the Google 10100 Project.

“I teach the way that I wish I was taught. The lectures are coming from me, an actual human being who is fascinated by the world around him.”

Salman Khan

At the writing of this ethosolution post, the Khan Academy had over 3,600 free courses online and had delivered 218,215,969 lessons (see an updated count at the Khan Academy website). Thank you Salman Khan and the Khan Academy for taking online home schooling and making it free online home schooling for the entire world to benefit and grow from. Projecting out into the future, we think it is easy to say that the world right now can’t even imagine the effects that your teachings are going to have on us as species, and for that we are absolutely honored to feature Salman Khan and the Khan Academy as an ethosolution idea and organization!

Thank you!
